Study Visa

Are you planning to visit the United States for work, study, or leisure? While the process for obtaining a temporary visa is generally straightforward, it can often feel overwhelming. We aim to simplify this experience and guide you every step of the way.

What Are Temporary or Visitation Visas?

Temporary visas allow noncitizens to enter the U.S. for a limited time and specific purpose—like studying, working, or vacationing. These nonimmigrant visas do not offer a path to permanent residency or citizenship.

Applications are usually submitted from outside the U.S. via an embassy or consulate, involving form DS-160, a processing fee, and an interview.

Types of Study Visas

F-1 Visa

Issued to students enrolled in full-time academic programs at accredited institutions. Applicants must show financial self-sufficiency and may work on campus in limited roles. Valid up to five years.

M-1 Visa

Designed for students in vocational or non-academic programs. Holders can stay for their course duration plus practical training. No work allowed beyond that. Typically valid for one year, extendable to three.

J-1 Visa

For participants in cultural and educational exchange programs, such as au pairs, trainees, and interns. Visa length varies by program. Most holders must return to their home country for two years afterward.

Types of Visiting Visas

B-1 Visa

For short-term business visits—like attending meetings or negotiating contracts. Allows up to six months of stay.

B-2 Visa

For tourism, visiting family, or receiving medical treatment. Also permits participation in unpaid events or short recreational study programs. Stay allowed up to six months.

Common Reasons for Visa Denial

Insufficient Documentation

Failing to submit enough evidence—especially regarding financial support—can lead to denial.

Weak Home Country Ties

Applicants must show strong reasons to return home, such as employment or family obligations. Lack of these ties may raise concerns of overstaying.

Fraud or Misrepresentation

Providing false or misleading information results in automatic denial.
